GLCN showcased at ICLEI World Congress
The sustainability work, targets and ambitions of the GLCN network were presented at a session during the ICLEI World Congress, which took place 19-22 June in GLCN City Montreal (Canada).
The ICLEI World Congress, which occurs every three years, brings together ICLEI Member cities from across the world and provides them with the opportunity to showcase how local and regional governments within the network are advancing sustainable urban development worldwide.
The GLCN session also played host to the 4th High Level event of the GLCN network. In attendance were: Solly Msimanga, Mayor of GLCN City Tshwane (South Africa), Bo-Youn Hwang, Assistant Mayor, Climate and Environment, GLCN City Seoul (South Korea), Murphy Robinson, Executive Director of General Services, GLCN City Denver (USA), Mark Hidson, Global Director, ICLEI’s Sustainable Procurement Centre, Johannes Van Der Merwe, Councilor of Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning, GLCN City Cape Town (South Africa), Balázs Szeneczey, Deputy Mayor, GLCN City Budapest (Hungary) and Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Mayor, GLCN City Warsaw (Poland).
During the session, Bo-Youn Hwang of Seoul spoke about the work and achievements of the Korean capital and the future of the network, saying “I note with pleasure that upon engagement with ICLEI the City of Tshwane has expressed interest in assuming the Chairmanship of the Global Leader’s Network for Sustainable Procurement for the next three years”.
Solly Msimanga of Tshwane also announced the city’s latest sustainable procurement target: by 2021 10% of the City of Tshwane's purchases will be sustainable.
