CLIMATE FRIENDLY PROCUREMENT OF ENERGY AND FOOD

CLIMATE FRIENDLY PROCUREMENT OF ENERGY AND FOOD

The Global Lead City Network on Sustainable Procurement (GLCN), coordinated by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, published another set of Global public procurement factsheets exploring the links between procurement and the climate crisis.

The factsheets provide you with an overview of the challenges and opportunities facing the energy as well as the food sector in the context of the global climate emergency. Further, you can explore some of the innovative actions GLCN cities have taken to address the climate crisis locally through public procurement.

The energy factsheet explains that as major energy purchasers the public sector is a strategically important market for the energy transition. For example, contracting authorities can integrate tender criteria and specifications for energy saving and clean energy supply or invest in renewable energy power plants.

Members of the Global Lead City Network on Sustainable Procurement (GLCN) have an extensive track record of leading on this topic, using their public procurement power to

1. Procuring electricity efficiency;

2. Procuring energy efficiency retrofit interventions;

3. Procuring clean energy.

Through the factsheet, you can learn more about key achievements of Buenos Aires, Cape Town, Rotterdam, Pittsburgh and Oslo

The food factsheet explains that public authorities as major purchasers of food and catering services can significantly contribute to a sustainable food value chain. Focusing on climate-related considerations, there are three key areas in which public procurers can support more sustainable food systems and catering practices:

  1. Climate friendly and nutritious food supply;
  2. food supply that is resilient to climate emergency;
  3. sustainable catering practices.

Through the factsheet, you can learn more about key achievements of Ghent, Helsinki, Tshwane, Denver, and Oslo
